MonKey B.U.T.T.s Instruction Manual

Note: Not recommended for use with NACON Daija.

Many moons ago, apes learned to use tools. Then many moons later, 3D printers. Now the apes have mastered magic: we’re turning DUST and LASERS into BUTTONS for your CONTROLLER.

SGF MonKey B.U.T.T.s (Button, Universal, Top Tier) are the next evolution of our award-winning* MonKey button caps. Each MonKey B.U.T.T. includes a body, retention ring, and cap that are laser-sintered from durable PA-12 nylon -- the same material used to make power tools -- as well as a noise dampening o-ring, Kailh Choc switch, and a custom PCB to interface between the switch and your favorite PCB.

The MonKey B.U.T.T.s are available in two sizes:

  • 30mm - a drop-in replacement for Sanwa OBSF-30 sized buttons
  • 24mm - a drop-in replacement for Sanwa OBSF-24 sized buttons

Switches are available in 4 options -- see our switch product page for info on each.

Caps/plungers are available in three distinct surface styles:

  • Flat, like the 🦧 original Flatbox style buttons
  • Convex, similar to Japanese 🇯🇵 Arcade buttons
  • Concave, similar to American 🇺🇸 Arcade buttons

Flex your custom controller with a sharp set of Dressed Up B.U.T.T.s in any solid color (or a full art print on your cap). Or show off a set of Nekkid MonKey B.U.T.T.s - all-natural, raw laser-sintered plastic goodness.

I like MonKey B.U.T.T.s and I cannot lie.

After 2 weeks with the 30mm BUTTs, these are now my favorite buttons -- by far. My preferred configuration is Concave MonKey caps w/ Kailh Choc V2 Reds.

I'm a JP-style button enjoyer, but SGF have accomplished something very special with these concave caps. They're silky smooth in "nekkid" PA-12 and every button press feels very confident. But, despite not being convex, you can still slide because of the smooth texture and rounded rims. Plus, the MX caps are extremely stable on the Kailh Choc V2 key-stem -- they don't pop out under regular use like some other buttons. I can't praise the 30mm concave buttons caps enough.

I prefer to use linear switches because I don't lift my fingers very high when I mash. That said, the tactile ChimPOMzee's are particularly satisfying to press -- they just don't fit my playstyle. Also, with the included O-Rings installed, BUTTs are super quiet but still bottom out very firmly.

Properly installed, BUTTs are very secure. And, with their horizontal quick-connect orientation, they are quite low-profile. Though, it did give me some trouble as the wires on my GND daisy chain were a bit short, so I had to be a little creative to make it work. Installation is much more involved than a snap-in button, but the time investment is worth it. It does take a bit of care with the integrated legs for the quick-connects, but SGF include spares just in case. As always, RTFM. Sidenote: the included toolkit is top-notch.

Lastly (and most importantly), SGF somehow trained monkeys to use magical lasers to turn dust into arcade buttons. I will continue to support monkeys in the workplace and buy more BUTTs to reduce the ever-growing banana deficit.

PRAISE THE MONKEH!

This B.U.T.T. feels great in my hands

These SGF buttons feel amazing to use, don't produce much sound (with my Shadow Hunting switches), and look great on my leverless. I was surprised to see how easy the installation went.

Excellent buttons.

I love the feel and texture of these buttons and how they use low profile switches. Work great with clicky switches like Kailh summer too!

Good for Small Enclosures

Great if you want something for small enclosures. Just wish that the colors are more consistent or painted on.

Customer support was great BTW.

Hey Steve,
Thanks so much for your feedback. I do my best to make sure the colors match the hex values provided on the webpage, but everyone's screens look a bit different, and printing technology only gets me so far :)
If you're unsatisfied please do take advantage of the return policy -- it's there to make sure everyone is as happy as possible. Otherwise, I'm definitely going to keep doing what I can to improve my processes and technologies for these.

Satisfying Press but be mindful of installation

Works perfectly with Kailh Ghost keyswitch. BUTTs with oring is slightly less mushy than Sitongs with oring, both using Kailh Ghost. As result BUTTs are slightly louder than Sitongs. Love the feel ofthe nylon button caps. Convex cap with oring with Kailh ghost sits lower than Sitong with oring with Kailh Ghost. Convex cap with oring with Kailh ghost sits higher than Punkworkshop V1 with Oring. In terms of button slide capability, PWSV1 > BUTT > Sitong > default Sanwas > OSBMX buttons.
Installation is tricky on thicker pannel above 3mm. The gap to stuff the quick disconnect into the PCB prong is very small. I have to connect the quick disconnect to PCB first then connect the pcb into the screwed in housing. The signal and ground prongs protrude laterally so I had to orient the prongs to the gaps of the button holes. This gets a 4.5 /5 because of slightly more involved installation than vertical prongs of OSBMX and other arcade buttons.
